Hyundai plans hydrogen-powered digging technology by 2023

The construction equipment to be designed helps digging techniques effective as Hyundai is spending time and energy for such an excavator series. The Korean manufacturer is on a mission to start mass distribution of hydrogen fuel excavators by 2023.

With collaboration, Hyundai Construction Equipment (HCE) along with Hyundai Motor Group and Hyundai Mobis are working together for a success. This is all happening at the Mabuk Research Center in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do. The group of companies is looking to develop hydrogen-powered forklifts and medium/large-capacity hydrogen-powered excavators, over the next few years.

Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis will be designing and manufacturing hydrogen fuel cell systems respectively, including power packs. Hyundai Construction Equipment will be designing, manufacturing, and evaluating the performance of excavators and forklifts.

Unlike conventional diesel powered equipment, hydrogen-based electric construction equipment uses electricity produced through the chemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen as its power source, meaning no emissions of toxic gases into the air.
