The contractor has been appointed by Kuwaiti-owned St Martins Property Investments to redevelop the former Greater London Authority headquarters at More London into a larger, low-carbon office and retail destination.
Designed by Gensler, with Waterman providing structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services, the project will expand the building from 18,000 sq m to 22,000 sq m by extending the floorplates around the existing 10-storey structure and replacing its distinctive leaning profile with a more efficient design.
The redevelopment will remove the existing glass façade and install a new high-performance cladding system while introducing landscaped terraces, modern office accommodation and new ground-floor retail space.
Originally constructed by Mace to a design by Foster + Partners, the landmark building opened in 2002 and served as London’s City Hall until the Greater London Authority relocated to the Royal Docks in 2021.
The refurbishment will also include infilling the central atrium, creating new roof terraces, replacing mechanical and electrical services, installing end-of-trip facilities and delivering shell-and-core office space ready for future occupiers.
External works will enhance the surrounding public realm, including improvements to The Scoop amphitheatre, upgraded landscaping and enhancements to Queen’s Walk along the south bank of the River Thames.
Ged Simmonds, managing director for private sector at Mace Construct, said: “Returning to More London presents a unique opportunity to build on the legacy of a landmark development.
“Our focus is on delivering a high-performing, sustainable workplace that reflects the evolving needs of occupiers while enhancing the public realm for the wider community.”
