McAlpine lands £450m Therme Manchester resort contract

The appointment follows the launch of Therme Horizon, a €1bn joint venture between Therme Group and private equity giant CVC, marking a major milestone in bringing the resort to fruition. Reports Contract Journal

McAlpine, which had previously been engaged under a pre-construction services agreement, will now take charge of delivering the landmark development — set to become the UK’s first urban wellbeing resort and the largest thermal pool complex in Europe.

The scheme promises an array of standout features, including over 25 waterslides, the country’s largest sauna facilities, multiple steam rooms, lush botanical gardens, immersive art experiences, and a family-friendly wave pool.

Located at the heart of TraffordCity, the resort will be seamlessly connected via the Bee Network, Metrolink services, and new canal-side walking and cycling routes, with a multi-storey car park also forming part of the plans.

Professor David Russell, chief executive of Therme UK, said McAlpine’s proven expertise in delivering complex projects, coupled with its commitment to community and sustainability, made it the “perfect partner” to lead the build.

Neil Martin, Chief Executive at Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “It’s a privilege to be appointed to help deliver such a visionary and innovative project. Therme Manchester represents a major investment in wellbeing, sustainability, and community infrastructure, and we are excited to play a part in shaping its future.”
