McLaren has secured a preconstruction services agreement for the redevelopment of an office scheme on Pudding Lane, at the site of the bakery linked to the Great Fire of London.
The contractor was appointed by Monument Estates for the Faryners House scheme at 25 Monument Street in the City of London.
The site sits next to the Monument and occupies the location of the bakery where the Great Fire of London began in 1666.
McLaren has not yet been awarded the main construction contract.
J F Hunt has secured the demolition and enabling works package. The contractor is expected to be novated to McLaren if the main construction contract is awarded.
The current programme envisages main construction work starting in August next year.
The redevelopment, which received planning permission earlier this year, will provide around 9,000 sq m of Grade A office space across 10 upper floors. Selected levels will also feature terraces.
Plans include a visitor centre focused on the Monument and a south-west-facing pocket square to improve the surrounding public realm.
The existing basement will be retained to reduce embodied carbon. The project is targeting a BREEAM Outstanding rating.
The scheme will also include a cycle hub, landscaped areas and improved pedestrian routes.
Fletcher Priest Architects designed the development.
The building’s name appears to reference baker Thomas Farriner, whose surname was also recorded as Faryner. His bakery on Pudding Lane was identified as the starting point of the Great Fire of London in 1666.
