A deal worth £216m was signed by the contractors for the northern second phase of the east coast main line power supply. The Rail Electrification Alliance comprises J Murphy & Sons, VolkerRail, Systra, Jacobs, Siemens Mobility and Network Rail.

This deal to upgrade the power capabilities from Doncaster to Edinburgh will be carried by the signed contractors. This power supply upgrade project is a part of a five years £1.2bn east coast upgrade programme.

The upgrade is aimed to deliver improved reliability and punctuality for passengers, after its full completion. Also, this will ensure the route has the electrical power capacity to deal with future passenger volumes.

In the past, the power infrastructure at the southern section of the route was upgraded. In the same pattern, the ongoing set project will provide similar work that is needed at the northern section.
