Hertfordshire University submits plan for science block

The School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science will be built after the plans submitted by The University of Hertfordshire get approval. Multi-disciplinary consultant BDP has designed the plan.

The plan comprises a five-storey SPECS building which is compartmentalized into three separate internal blocks divided by a central T-shaped atrium. The university is aiming for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard building with a mixed facade of materials.

The building allows viewing to maximizing design for manufacture and assembly principles using a common primary 9m x 9m structural grid. This will be across the entire building which facilitates a high degree of similarity across elements.

The construction also reduces the need for ‘special’ panels. BDP is also a building services engineer with Aecom providing civil and structural engineering services. Project management and cost consultancy are handled by Faithful & Gould.

The university has already cleared a central site at the centre of its College Lane Campus. This is located in south Hatfield and built to be the landmark 165,000 sq ft project.
