Salford Former Union HQ to Be Transformed into University Hub

Development partnership ECF has lodged plans with Salford City Council and the University of Salford to redevelop Faraday House, a prominent building on the A6 beside Irwell Place Car Park.

The proposals form part of the wider 240-acre Crescent Salford regeneration programme, which is reshaping this key stretch of the city and strengthening links between the university and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Originally constructed as the headquarters of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers before becoming part of the university campus in the 1970s, Faraday House has remained vacant for several years. Under the new plans, the building would be retained and comprehensively refurbished to provide 3,500 sq m of flexible workspace for the university’s professional services teams.

The scheme represents the next stage of the university’s Campus Connectivity Plan, focused on enhancing research facilities, teaching environments and public spaces. Designs by PRP, with interiors by OBI and landscape design from Planit, feature new green areas, secure cycle storage and a fully accessible entrance to support a more inclusive working environment.

Subject to approval, construction is expected to begin before the summer, with completion targeted for winter 2027.
