Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has launched the initial market engagement for a major new contract supporting Metrolink’s asset renewals programme. This contract will involve replacing critical infrastructure such as track, overhead lines, and the power distribution system that keeps trams running smoothly. Reports Contract Journal

Set to begin in 2027 and spanning up to 12 years, the new agreement may also extend to a broader scope of works. These could include improvements to existing Metrolink stops, construction of new stops, line extensions, infrastructure for next-generation vehicles, Access for All rail initiatives, and the development of Travel Hubs.

As part of the early engagement process, TfGM is inviting feedback from potential suppliers on its proposed delivery model, recognising the significant scale, diversity, and complexity of the programme.

Danny Vaughan, Chief Network Officer at TfGM, said:
“This is a significant opportunity for suppliers to help shape how we deliver the next generation of Metrolink and rail accessibility infrastructure across Greater Manchester.
We’re looking for innovative, efficient and collaborative approaches. We encourage all interested parties to engage with us through this process.”

TfGM is particularly interested in hearing views on different methods of delivery, including delivery partner models and the potential to bundle multiple workstreams into a single contract to improve efficiency and minimise disruption.

Following the initial questionnaire stage, up to 10 suppliers will be invited to participate in one-to-one workshops to explore feedback in greater detail
