The contracts span 11 treatment facilities — seven wastewater and four clean water sites — designed to enhance resilience, capacity, and environmental performance across the region.

The largest agreement, valued at nearly £24m, forms part of Southern Water’s priority water treatment works growth programme. It includes upgrades at Billingshurst, Dymchurch, Goddards Green, Ham Hill, Northfleet, Sidlesham, and Stockbridge, focusing on increasing capacity to meet growing demand and population expansion.

A further £5m package, awarded under the nitrate removal programme, covers Madehurst, Patching, Mossy Bottom, and Patcham Water Supply Works. This phase will deliver technical solutions aimed at reducing nitrate concentrations and maintaining drinking water quality compliance.

Both early contractor involvement (ECI) agreements will be delivered under the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract framework. Kier will work collaboratively with Southern Water to optimise design, improve constructability, and secure programme certainty before full-scale construction begins.

Sustainability and local economic benefit are central to both projects, with a focus on low-carbon design, waste minimisation, and local supply chain engagement. The schemes will also create new apprenticeship and training opportunities across the region.

Andy Beech, Framework Director at Kier, said the awards demonstrate Southern Water’s confidence in Kier’s capability to deliver complex projects across both clean and wastewater sectors. He added that Kier will apply its technical expertise and collaborative approach to create lasting value.

These contract wins further strengthen Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks’ position as a key partner within the UK water sector, following recent AMP8 framework renewals with Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, United Utilities, Anglian Water, and Severn Trent.
