The Sir Bobby Robson Institute is set to lead advancements in cancer care while increasing access to clinical trials for patients across the North East, north Cumbria, and North Yorkshire.
Since January, Robertson has been collaborating with Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust under the ProCure23 framework, delivering pre-construction expertise and technical design support in partnership with P+HS Architects. Reports Contract Journal
The building’s design takes inspiration from the molecular hexagon structure behind Rubraca – the first “Geordie cancer drug” – and will bring together the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre with cancer and blood disorder research teams in a purpose-built three-storey facility.
Neil Kennedy, regional managing director at Robertson Construction North East, described the development as “the next step in delivering a facility that will have a profound impact on cancer treatment and research, both across the North East and on a global scale.”
To date, £20m has been raised through the efforts of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, part of Newcastle Hospitals Charity, with a fresh campaign soon to launch to secure the final £10m needed.
Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to begin next spring, with the institute scheduled for completion in 2028.
