A trio of contractors has been appointed to Sellafield’s new Infrastructure Delivery Partnership (IDP) — a long-term framework aimed at modernising and maintaining the site’s vital infrastructure, covering power, water, transport, and security systems.
The nine-year agreement, with the option to extend for a further six years through to 2040, succeeds the former Infrastructure Strategic Alliance and forms a key pillar of Sellafield’s long-term acquisition strategy.
Under the new partnership, Morgan Sindall will take on the role of electrical distribution partner, Costain will oversee utilities delivery under a lot valued at up to £1bn, while Hochtief will lead the civils work, worth around £595m.
The trio’s responsibilities will span detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover, all supporting Sellafield’s ongoing nuclear decommissioning and waste management mission. Their scope of work will include maintaining and upgrading core services such as electricity networks, water systems, roads, rail links, bridges, foundations, and security infrastructure.
Beyond infrastructure delivery, the partnership will drive social value initiatives, including apprenticeships, skills development, opportunities for SMEs, and local employment, all underpinned by a shared sustainability and community growth strategy.
James Riddick, Sellafield’s chief supply chain officer, said the deal would “provide robust and reliable infrastructure to support nuclear decommissioning while unlocking investment and opportunities for the local community.”
