The contract marks the latest development in a £332m programme aimed at improving transport infrastructure around Didcot.

GRAHAM is responsible for the detailed design of the Culham river crossing and the Clifton Hampden bypass sections of the wider scheme.

Meanwhile, VolkerFitzpatrick will deliver a dual carriageway along the A4130 east of the A34 Milton Interchange, along with a new single-carriageway bridge crossing the railway line and Milton Road.

The dualling of the A4130 will reuse the existing carriageway, converting the current southern ditch into a central reservation while adding two new lanes on the southern side. Under the new layout, the existing carriageway will carry eastbound traffic towards Didcot, while the newly built lanes will handle westbound traffic heading towards the Milton Interchange.

A key feature of the project is the three-span Science Bridge, which will cross over the existing A4130, the Great Western Main Line railway and Milton Road.

The new route will then continue through the former Didcot A Power Station site, reconnecting with the A4130 north of Purchas Road roundabout via a new T-junction.

Paul Lilley, Strategic Projects Director, VolkerFitzpatrick said: “Our team brings extensive experience in delivering complex civil engineering projects, and we look forward to working closely with Oxfordshire County Council and its partners to create infrastructure that will improve journey times, enhance sustainable travel options, and support future growth across the region.”

Enabling works — including site clearance, archaeological investigations and utility diversions — are already underway across the project area.

Main construction is expected to begin in the spring and is scheduled to take around two years to complete.
