Willmott Dixon has officially broken ground on the £140m Emergency Care Building at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Delivered under the ProCure23 framework with Mace, the four-storey development will significantly expand capacity for University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, replacing the outdated 1970s-built emergency department with a modern, state-of-the-art care hub set to open in 2028/29.

The new building will feature a major Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care unit, while paediatric emergency services will relocate to refurbished existing facilities once construction is complete.

The upper floors will provide four interventional radiology theatres and five surgical theatres for both emergency and elective procedures, complemented by new imaging suites, recovery zones, and enhanced staff amenities.

Programme Director Stuart Windsor said: “It has been a long journey to get to today, but we will now finally see the new Emergency Care Building start to rise from the ground.”

As part of its commitment to the community, Willmott Dixon will deliver significant social value through its Building Lives Academy — creating apprenticeships, offering employment opportunities, and sourcing materials and labour locally across the South West.

The Derriford Hospital scheme adds to Willmott Dixon’s growing healthcare portfolio, which also includes the £30m Barnes Hospital redevelopment in London.
