£200m London tunnels contract handed over to Kier

Kier to deliver £66m Twickenham sewage works upgrade

Kier Highways was shortlisted to take over the £200m maintenance and management contract. The road tunnels and pumping stations maintenance works are included in the contract which is handed over by Transport for London (TfL).

The contract tenure starts in April 2021 and runs for eight years, with the option to extend by a further four years. Kier will be responsible for maintaining and managing 10 tunnels and 106 pump stations.

The tunnels maintained under the new contract are:

  • A102 Blackwall southbound
  • A102 Blackwall northbound
  • A101 Rotherhithe
  • A12 George Green
  • A12 Green Man
  • A12 Eastway
  • A3211 Upper Thames Street
  • A406 Fore Street, and
  • A2 Eltham Tunnel
  • A40 Hangar.

The contract covers the maintenance of tunnels and highway pump stations, including mechanical, electrical and control activities associated with each tunnel, safety inspections, renewals, intelligent transport systems (ITS).

Management of all of TfL’s tunnels is also part of the contract, including its tunnel river crossings, brought into the same team. Also, all the maintenance of tunnels will be delivered by Kier.
