Cardiff Council has approved Kier for the construction of new Fitzalan High School. The firm has been involved with the development of the new Fitzalan High School since the design phase, and has been on site carrying out enabling works since July 2020.
Kier will take up the works as the £64.3m project includes teaching facilities for 1,500 secondary school children. The school will have two interconnecting buildings which is located on Leckwith Road to the southwest of Cardiff.
The school will be built with 88 classrooms, drama studio, nine science laboratories, sports hall and dining area. A 1,800-seat multi-function hall will be part of the construction with an atrium and learning spaces to support vocational training.
A 25-metre four-lane swimming pool will be available in the sports facilities area along with four multi-use games areas (MUGAs), both grass and synthetic sport pitches. The school has been designed to be built to a BREEAM excellent standard.
The expected date of completion is September 2022. It is jointly funded by Cardiff Council and the Welsh government as part of its Band B 21st Century Schools and Education investment programme.
