The John Innes Centre has signed the main design and build contract for its Technology Platform 1 project, marking the transition of the scheme from pre-construction into the delivery phase.

The package forms part of the Next Generation Infrastructure programme, which aims to modernise facilities supporting the John Innes Centre and The Sainsbury Laboratory, two leading research organisations specialising in plant and microbial science.

Vinci’s scope includes the demolition of existing buildings on the site and the construction of specialist scientific research glasshouses, a new plant room building, an insectary laboratory and a horticulture store.

The contractor will also deliver associated landscaping, drainage, irrigation plant works and external services as part of the project.

The wider infrastructure programme is intended to replace ageing and deteriorating research facilities while strengthening the institutes’ capacity to turn plant and microbial science research into practical solutions.
