The plans will transform the station into a cutting-edge, fully accessible transport hub, complemented by new commercial, cultural and public spaces designed to serve the wider community.
Policy Chairman of the City of London Corporation, Chris Hayward, said: “The redevelopment of Liverpool Street station marks a significant milestone for the Square Mile.
“It will reinforce the City’s thriving business environment with world-class infrastructure, generate new employment opportunities and further strengthen our standing as a leading global destination. At the same time, it ensures residents, workers and visitors alike benefit from a modern, inclusive and forward-looking transport hub.
“In an era of intensifying competition between global cities, we must show we are open to investment that enhances our urban landscape. This transformation of Liverpool Street station demonstrates exactly that commitment.”
Chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transportation Committee, Tom Sleigh, added: “Everyone appreciates an upgrade, and this remarkable transformation of Britain’s busiest railway station truly delivers on every front.
“Though long awaited, it is a hugely welcome boost for the nation. The sweeping brick arches and striking architectural vision will firmly establish Liverpool Street as a contemporary landmark — a true modern cathedral of transport.”
