Bowmer & Kirkland can now start work for a £54m glass research and development facility, as this main contractor for the project secures planning permission. This project at St Helens is for the purpose to build a 160,000 sq ft Global Centre of Excellence.
Glass Futures, which is a Not-for-profit research and technology organization has secured the approval as St Helens Borough council planning committee approved planning permission for the development at Saints Retail Park.
This site was under the control of United Glassworks previously. Now, the planning application was prepared and submitted by developer and landowner Network Space, on behalf of Glass Futures.
It will also be a place for private companies to test and trial their own commercial ideas. The facility will be used to host industry and government backed R&D projects focused on decarbonising glass production.
Bowmer & Kirkland has been appointed to build the Global Centre of Excellence following an open procurement process through the North West Construction Hub. Work is expected to begin on site in July this year and be complete by December 2022.
