GMI Construction will construct a £50 million student housing project in York under an agreement with the developer Olympian Homes on the site of an abandoned movie theatre and bingo hall.
The 80,000-square-foot property will contain a four-story building with 275 beds and amenities like a gym, games room, co-working space, and public dining areas. It is located southeast of the city centre in the Fulford neighbourhood. The project, which will also contain a movie theatre, will be known as Rialto House in remembrance of the legendary theatre that originally occupied the location and in recognition of the area’s rich history.
Construction will begin in the next weeks following the completion of archaeological work. Olympian Homes is developing the purpose-built student accommodation complex in collaboration with financier Cain International as part of its larger portfolio of hotel, build-to-rent, and co-living initiatives.
