The project represents a major milestone in the wider £36m regeneration of a Northumberland town, with local leaders aiming to boost footfall and revive the evening economy.

Plans focus on a new leisure-led development anchored by a five-screen cinema operated by REEL Cinemas, alongside two restaurant units and a family-oriented competitive socialising venue designed to attract visitors back into the town centre.

The scheme is being delivered by Advance Northumberland, with funding coming from a mix of government support, council investment and local backing. Procurement was carried out via the Procure Partnerships Framework.

Positioned as the only first-run cinema between Edinburgh and Blyth, the venue is expected to attract up to 157,000 visits annually, playing a key role in increasing dwell time and revitalising high street activity.

Robertson Construction north east md Neil Kennedy said: “Projects like this have the potential to transform a community, and we look forward to delivering meaningful local benefits throughout the process that contribute to the town’s long-term growth.”

Local councillor Caroline Ball said construction is set to begin shortly, signalling growing momentum across multiple regeneration schemes in the area.
