The new dual carriageway will connect the A46 Pennells Roundabout with the Lincoln Eastern Bypass, marking the long-awaited completion of Lincoln’s full ring road and helping to ease longstanding pressure along the busy A46 corridor.
Supported by funding from the Department for Transport, the project aims to unlock up to 4,500 new homes and around seven hectares of employment land, while reducing congestion in Lincoln and nearby villages.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-March, with the scheme expected to be completed by May 2029.
The programme includes the creation of new roundabouts at South Hykeham Road, Brant Road and Grantham Road, alongside new bridges at Station Road and spanning the River Witham. Dedicated walking and cycling routes will also form part of the development, promoting safer and more sustainable travel options.
Roads and buses minister Simon Lightwood said: “Roads are vital connections for communities, improving access to jobs and opportunities, and I am pleased to confirm funding for this important scheme.”
Originally put forward in the mid-2000s, the relief road has experienced significant delays before finally securing full financial backing.
