With more than £250 million in funding from Stockport MDC and ECF, the Stockport centre will be transformed to include 1,200 new residences as well as retail, leisure, and office space.
“Work to implement the Town Centre West masterplan is proceeding at pace, with a number of our iconic works, such as the Interchange, Weir Mill, and the most recent phase of Stockport Exchange, concluding this year and next,” said Lord Kerslake, Chair of Stockport MDC. This most recent accomplishment represents a significant advancement in our strategy to build one of UK’s and the region’s most livable town centres.
Muse, Legal & General, and Homes England, the government’s housing and regeneration agency, have joined together to form ECF. The location will be the subject of a planning application in the summer of 2024, with a goal for the first phase’s completion in the summer of 2027, reports Construction Journal.
Stockport 8 is next to two more iconic developments within the Town Centre West master plan. Included in these are Weir Mill, a waterfront heritage structure that is being restored to create new homes and a destination for the town’s leisure and culture, and Stockport Interchange, a major redevelopment of the former bus station into a cutting-edge transport hub with new homes and a two-acre rooftop park by Transport for Greater Manchester.
