The Environment Agency and Somerset Council have awarded the Construction Continuation Contract for the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier Scheme, enabling work to move forward on the main barrier structure.

The latest contract award forms part of a phased procurement approach designed to reduce financial risk, manage the impact of construction cost inflation and allow detailed design development before committing to the full construction programme.

The project has also been subject to a design efficiency review aimed at maintaining value for money while preserving flood protection benefits and keeping the construction programme on track.

The primary objective of the scheme remains unchanged, with the tidal barrier designed to protect approximately 12,800 homes, businesses and critical infrastructure assets from future tidal flooding.

Design refinements include reducing the height of the barrier’s three towers by 10m to approximately 15m, introducing more streamlined structures and incorporating modern mechanical systems to improve long-term performance.

Additional changes include relocating drive equipment to the base of the towers to improve maintenance access and reduce operating costs, while the original overbridge design has been replaced with lighter high-level walkways.

The Environment Agency said the revised design will deliver the same level of flood risk protection while ensuring the project remains affordable, efficient and sustainable over its operational lifespan.

Kier has been working on site since 2023 and has already completed a series of complex enabling works, including temporary structures required to create safe construction platforms and establish foundations for the barrier.

A major project milestone was achieved in April with the departure of the Haven SeaSeven jack-up barge, marking completion of temporary works associated with the bypass channel and in-channel cofferdam and allowing construction of permanent structures to begin.

Once completed, the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier Scheme will provide long-term protection for thousands of homes, businesses and key infrastructure assets, safeguarding the area from tidal flooding through to 2125.
