The Scottish Government-backed scheme will feature a mix of walls, glass panels, and flood gates set along a newly raised walkway, designed to protect the town centre from the River Nith.

Major construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, running through to spring 2028, with landscaping and defects work extending until 2030.

The new defences will stretch from the Dumfries and Galloway Standard offices downstream past Dock Park, with further barriers planned across the river at Welldale and Kenmure Terrace.

A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Council said the project will not only safeguard homes and businesses but also enhance the riverside, turning it into an inviting public space.

Dumfries has faced repeated flooding for decades, causing damage to property, discouraging investment, and raising concerns that the risks will intensify with climate change.
