Morgan Sindall starts £31m Leeds resi scheme

A new primary and nursery school will be under construction by Morgan Sindall, after the firm won a £7.8m contract. The Pontypool site comprising a welsh-speaking comprehensive school will be expanded with the new buildings.

Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, in Trevethin, Pontypool, is currently home to 977 secondary pupils aged 11-18. Morgan Sindall Construction was appointed by Torfaen Borough County Council to provide space for 210 primary school children and a nursery for 30 pre-school kids.

The council wants to increase the number of Welsh-speaking primary schools available in Pontypool. Construction began in early January and is planned for completion in March 2022 targeting a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating for sustainability.

The project will have a green roof with layers of vegetation to act as a natural insulation method and enable a sustainable drainage design. A ‘rain garden’ will be complementary and a depression in the ground will be filled with plants and wildlife to help with water filtration.

Plans for the main building show a two-storey, 2,000 sq m building with nine general purpose classrooms. Outside will be a multi-use games area, an informal play area and amenity grass areas, and a ‘wildlife habitat area’ for learning.
