Highways England calls bids for £60m Stonehenge tunnel contract

Highways England has put up an advertisement for working through the £1.7bn Stonehenge tunnel project in total. However the tender called for the delivery assurance partner by the national authority is valued for a £60m works contract, for ‘Amesbury to Berwick Down’ project.

This A303 Stonehenge project contract now starts tenders to invite a consulting engineer who is expected to last seven years with an optional five-year extension. The winning bidder will undertake all of the NEC4 contract management functions.

The works will help enable Highways England to fulfill its role as project manager for the main construction contract. The deadline for responses is 27th July 2021 while the contract start date is 1st December.

Highways England has appointed Aecom as technical partner on the project in 2017 under a £50m contract. However, it turned with an increase totaling up to £75m because of changes to the scope.

Highways England is in talks with three shortlisted contracting groups and is now assessing final bids. These groups are:

  • HDJV, consisting of Hochtief Infrastructure GmbH and Dragados;
  • BMJV, comprising Bouygues Travaux Publics and J Murphy & Sons;
  • MORE JV, comprising FCC Construcción (42.5%), Webuild (42.5%) and BeMo Tunnelling UK (15%).
