The changeover was made after testing ten battery storage units on the contractor’s sites. Kier has calculated a monthly carbon savings of seven tonnes per unit, a 59% reduction in generator run time, and a financial savings of nearly £2,000 after BSU hire charges are deducted. Sunbelt Rentals will deliver the battery storage units to Kier locations.
Generators and BSUs operate together to provide the primary source of electricity for site operations. When the battery runs low, the generator starts and recharges it, then turns it off once wholly charged. This means that generators can be shrunk, resulting in significant fuel savings and cost and carbon reductions.
“This is a positive step forward for us to accomplish the goals in our Building for a Sustainable World framework,” said Chris Lilley, Kier Group‘s health, safety, wellbeing, and sustainability. It will assist us in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions following our carbon reduction plan’s net zero pathway. Not only that, but it will drastically reduce our fuel costs.”
