The long-anticipated upgrade of the A47 road scheme, originally awarded to Galliford Try, faced delays due to legal challenges and was subsequently retendered last year in a bid to achieve better value. Reports Contract Journal
The project will see the construction of a new 1.6km free-flow link road connecting the A11 northbound to the A47 eastbound, featuring two new underpasses, along with a separate 1km local link road.
Skanska has been appointed to deliver the scheme, which also includes building a new road bridge, two new junctions, a footbridge, and widening an existing link road. These improvements aim to reduce congestion and enhance journey times along this vital route in East Anglia.
The A47/A11 Thickthorn junction upgrade will also help unlock land for the development of 44,000 new homes in the region.
Enabling works are already in progress, with full construction scheduled for completion by 2028/29
