Wates Begins £300m Expansion of Suffolk Prison

The £300m project will deliver 741 new category C prison places across three four-storey houseblocks, supporting the Government’s target of creating 14,000 additional prison places by 2031. Reports Contract Journal

Alongside the new accommodation, the development includes key ancillary facilities such as a healthcare building, workshop and teaching spaces, as well as upgrades to several existing structures, including the gym and gatehouse.

The project will also drive social value by creating apprenticeships, employment opportunities for prison leavers, and training initiatives to upskill prisoners.

Utilising modern methods of construction, the scheme incorporates standardised designs to enhance efficiency—reducing carbon emissions, accelerating project delivery, and ensuring the new facilities meet the highest standards of quality, security, and sustainability. The project also aims to achieve a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain.

Key stakeholders involved include Mace, Pick Everard, Baker Hicks, Gleeds, and Prism Offsite Manufacturing, with trade contractors such as Moortown, Gallagher, Trident Electrical, Munnelley, Green Shield, and HSH playing a vital role.

The new prison wings are scheduled for completion in Summer 2027, with prisoners set to move in shortly thereafter.
