The long-awaited regeneration of the Coleford site is set to move forward, transforming it into a modern leisure and community hub following years of planning, funding delays and redesign.
BAM Construct UK was initially appointed to deliver the £11m scheme in 2023 but later withdrew after failing to agree a final contract price with the local council. The revised project cost has not been officially confirmed but is understood to be around £12m.
At the heart of the development is a new indoor leisure facility featuring a 53-station gym, group fitness studios, soft play areas, party rooms and a café. The scheme also includes refurbishment of the former Speedwell Building to provide office space, community facilities and a new outreach base for Hartpury University.
External works will deliver a floodlit 3G pitch for rugby and football, complete with a spectator area, supported by funding from the The Football Association secured last year.
Pick Everard is acting as cost and project manager for the scheme, supporting its delivery through to completion.
Forest of Dean cabinet member Sid Phelps said: “This is a hugely positive moment for the Council as we confirm that contracts have now been formally agreed with Willmott Dixon for the construction of Five Acres.”
He added: “With an intended start date of 27 April 2026, we are excited to move from planning to delivery and to see this much-anticipated facility begin to take shape.”
Willmott Dixon director Richard David said: “We are pleased to be working alongside Forest of Dean District Council to deliver this much-anticipated new leisure facility at Five Acres.”
