Stor Esno has boarded a fully bio-based binder system applicable to boards and insulation. This Finnish wood products manufacturer will use lignin in replacement with formaldehyde or isocyanates that were more usually used.
Stora Enso’s NeoLigno binder is being marketed to manufacturers of particle board and mineral wool insulation as a lignin-based replacement for fossil-based binders or hazardous chemicals. Cellulose is the top most common macromolecule and Lignin is nature’s second common.
Lignin is found in all plants and makes up to a third of the composition of wood. It is a renewable raw material free from toxic substances and fully traceable to its area of origin. Sunila Mill in Finland has been the location for Stora Enso to produce commercially since 2015.
