Construction Union concerns on extension of sick pay rights: Coronavirus impact

There’s a lot of discussion happening about the COVID (Coronavirus) and Construction union Unite in the UK asks its employers to look into the issue seriously. The decisions to relax sick pay rules by the employers helps tackle the spread of the virus, said the union.

The legislation of statutory sick pay (SSP) was passed last week in an emergency gathering headed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. This legislation allows a sick leave when suspected with corona virus and to stay away from the co-workers to self-isolate if they have symptoms.

The UK has seen six people die from the virus till date, with at least 320 cases confirmed. It has been reported that even those who feel mildly unwell with fever or signs of respiratory infections will soon be asked to stay at home and self-isolate under government plans. The construction industry employees operating under a collective industrial agreement and covered under SSP are entitled to ‘industry sick pay’, which can be up to an additional £180 a week, said the Union.
