The contractor, which previously delivered pre-construction services for the scheme, has now been appointed to begin main construction works on the project, with the build programme expected to take approximately two years to complete.

The new Central Hall building forms a key part of the National Railway Museum’s wider transformation programme and will occupy a central position within the York Central regeneration development.

Designed by Feilden Fowles Architects, the circular structure will create a new main entrance, gallery space, café, retail area and visitor facilities, while reconnecting parts of the museum estate that have long been separated by Leeman Road.

The contract award follows confirmation of an additional £3m government funding package announced by the Prime Minister to help advance the project.

National Railway Museum Director Craig Bentley described Central Hall as more than just a new building, saying it reflects the museum’s commitment to being open and accessible to all visitors while setting new sustainability standards for the site.

The development will also house Railway Futures: The Porterbrook Gallery, a dedicated exhibition space showcasing emerging rail technologies and innovations shaping the future of the railway industry.

Its recycled copper-clad façade and timber-ribbed glazed roof draw inspiration from historic railway roundhouses while delivering a contemporary low-carbon building design.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2028.
