South Derbyshire District Council’s planned civic and leisure hub will replace the existing Green Bank Leisure Centre and council offices, forming a key part of the wider regeneration of Swadlincote town centre.
BAM and Bowmer & Kirkland are understood to be competing for the construction contract for the development, which has been designed by CPMG Architects. The new facility will feature a six-court sports hall, two swimming pools, a fitness suite and multi-purpose studios, alongside modern civic offices arranged across three floors with meeting rooms and open-plan workspaces overlooking nearby parkland.
The scheme has been designed with a strong focus on sustainability and community use. Key features include extensive glazing to create stronger connections between indoor and outdoor spaces, timber architectural elements and landscaped public areas designed by Ares Landscape Architects.
The all-electric building will be powered by air source heat pumps and rooftop solar panels, helping to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 26 tonnes annually while supporting the council’s environmental objectives.
Alessio Granata, senior architect at CPMG, said: “The plans for Swadlincote Leisure Centre showcase a futureproofed design, one that will support the local community for years to come. Working alongside the council and our project partners, we’re now in a position where we will soon begin to see our design come to life – which is incredibly exciting.
“As a practice, we are continually focused on implementing designs that have a people-first approach and Swadlincote Leisure Centre is a clear example of this in practice. From the exterior to the interior – the design aims to create a space that offers more than just leisure activities, but also a place where the local community can come together and interact.”
