McAlpine gets plan approval for £260m Gateshead arena

The development of a £260m arena-led regeneration scheme will take place as the Gateshead Council has approved plans for the same. Sir Robert McAlpine works as the main contractor for the project and will now start site enabling work before the end of the year.

The site location of construction is at the NewcastleGateshead waterfront at Gateshead Quays. The construction includes a world class arena, restaurants, purpose built conference and exhibition centre, large areas of outdoor realm and performance space, and a dual branded hotel.

The construction is expected to commence in March 2021 and the new complex to open in 2023. Venue management company ASM Global will operate the campus, which includes a 12,500 capacity, 29,000 sqm arena and over 7,000 sqm of flexible event space.

Gateshead Council’s development partner Ask:PATRIZIA have submitted the plans designed by HOK architects. The project team also includes: Project Manager and Contract Administrator, Legends International; Landscape Architects, Planit:IE; Lichfields, Planning Consultants; ARUP, structural engineers; Gardiner and Theobald, QS.
