Wates receives green light for underground houses project

The construction works related to revamp of a leisure centre were started by Wates Construction. This project in Carlisle will be done with redevelopment and expansion of the Sands Centre to provide improved sports facilities.

The approval from Carlisle City Council allows the development of a community centre too. Besides, the two-storey extension will add 40,000 sq ft to the existing building with the facilities including an events hall with viewing gallery, a 20-metre learner pool with moveable floor, a four-court sports hall, and a 25-metre swimming pool.

The reconstruction also includes a café and bar area, a non-clinical NHS facility, and dance studios. The construction of the Sands Centre started this week while the works are expected to complete by October 2022.

Alongside, the existing Sands Centre will remain active and open until the completion of revamp works. The project team includes GT3 Architects, Pick Everard, FT Leisure, and Buro Happold. Wates adds this as the third leisure project through the Scape Construction framework.

The firm has recently started Braywick Leisure Centre and the Sandwell Aquatics Centre. Early 2022 is the estimated date of completion.
